If you feel anxious even thinking about sitting in the dentist’s chair, you are not alone. However, did you know there is a way to face your fear and have your dental work done painlessly? Painless dentistry is available for all levels of anxiety. Your River Forest, IL dentist, Dr. Courtney Villari at Ovation Dental, can help you quell your anxiety and get the dental work you need.Sedation Dentistry

What is sedation dentistry?
Many patients are scared of the dentist, whether due to the dental drill or just the environment. Sedation dentistry uses the help of medication administered to an anxious patient to allow them to relax and go through their procedure comfortably. While often called “sleep” dentistry, sedation dentistry usually does not involve the patient being asleep at all. Your River Forest dentist administers the sedation medication in the form of oral tablets, an IV or inhaled gas.

What are the different levels of sedation dentistry?

  • Minimal sedation: Minimal sedation, the lowest level of sedation dentistry, allows the patient to relax while being completely awake and alert.
  • Moderate sedation: Moderate sedation relaxes the patient a little more. Your words may slur and you probably will not remember some or all parts of the procedure.
  • Deep sedation: During deep sedation, the patient might be asleep, but is awakened easily.
  • General anesthesia: The heaviest form of sedation dentistry, general anesthesia puts the patient completely to sleep and they remain asleep until the anesthesia wears off.

The different levels of sedation depend on your personal anxiety levels, pain threshold and the extent of the dental work you require. While there is always a risk when undergoing anesthesia, sedation dentistry is generally very safe with high success rates. People with certain conditions should not undergo sedation dentistry. Consult with your dentist to determine if and which level of sedation dentistry is right for you.
